17th Gyalwa Karmapa"Buddhism is a way of life through which we develop the qualities of our mind.
This way of life is very unusual, as it is a means to attain happiness without harming others.

THE 17th GYALWA KARMAPA

DHAGPO KAGYU LING
Center for buddhist studies and meditation

Last December 29, close to 300 people gathered in the Institute for Lama Jigme Rinpoche's winter course. It's three o'clock. There is neither Rinpoche's throne in place for the teaching, nor a scholar from Kalimpong arrived to teach philosophy, nor even one of Dhagpo's lamas. Under the benevolent regard of the Buddha, and before the slightly surprised one of the public, sit Julien and Olivier. Both are volunteers and residents at Dhagpo, and they are preparing to begin the explanations of the first chapter of The Gateway to Knowledge by Mipham Rinpoche.

Everyone in the room can feel that something important is happening: Dhagpo Kagyu Ling's Institute is continuing to deploy its value—the fruit of causes and conditions that we will discuss further in an upcoming post.

One of the elements of the Institute is the curriculum intended for the volunteers actively invested in the center and who rarely have the opportunity to come to the teachings of the public program. It's been several years now that different study cycles have been put in place by Lama Jigme Rinpoche in order to allow them to integrate the Dharma through traditional texts.
One such cycle of study takes place each January when acharya (equivalent to a doctor of philosophy) Kalzang Puntso transmits Vasubandhu's Abhidharmakosha. On this occasion, the center closes to allow each individual to fully commit to study and meditation.

This text leads to progressive and precise discernment of phenomena; it considers the “knowable” in relation to phenomena that generate samsara and those that are causes for liberation.  Kalzang Puntso is reputed for this knowledge of this text by Vasubandhu and, throughout the past years, we have been able to see his ability to render this text accessible to us. Discernment is one of the three trainings that, along with ethic and meditation, constitutes the path to enlightenment.

Manjushri, the Bodhisattva of Wisdom

This is the third year the Dhagpo's volunteer community consecrates the month of January to study in this way. During this same period, acharya Yeshe Donden teaches The Sutra of the Basis of the Vinaya at Dhagpo Kundreul Ling, which describes the characteristics of karma in detail, to the community of Kundreul Ling. And two other acharyas travel throughout France sharing the multiple aspects of Buddhist philosophy in the different Dhagpo urban centers (KTTs).

While Dhagpo Kagyu Ling's Institute is a place, it also represents an activity of the expansion of the Buddha's teaching. It is through study, reflection, and meditation that each of us applies according to our capacities and where we are, that the value of the Dharma ripens and becomes concretely beneficial for beings.
