17th Gyalwa Karmapa"Buddhism is a way of life through which we develop the qualities of our mind.
This way of life is very unusual, as it is a means to attain happiness without harming others.

THE 17th GYALWA KARMAPA

DHAGPO KAGYU LING
Center for buddhist studies and meditation

“Anyone who applies the Buddha's teaching will discover its reality in his own mind.”
This is, essentially, what Khenpo Chodrak Rinpoche tells us during the summer course, which takes place during three weeks every summer at Dhagpo Kagyu Ling.

If we are still asking ourselves what the Mahayana is, and what the Great Vehicle is, at the beginning of July, by the end of the month we have it figured out! We have explored it in all its aspects: as much as a progressive path as a daily practice and from the necessary conditions for its application up through the benefits we receive by applying it.

It is inspiring to see how Khenpo Chodrak develops on the study text and passes from one shastra (commentary) to another to give a vast, complete perspective on the subject at hand. For example, there are five successive steps to accomplish on the path of the Great Vehicle.

  • Step One: The path of accumulation. This is within our grasp! Listening to the teachings, reflecting, and daily ethic make up this path.
  • Step Two: The path of junction. Here, meditation predominates with the progressive exploration of reality.
  • Step Three: The path of seeing. This step is decisive. It is the moment we recognize reality, the moment when we are definitely freed from confusion and illusion.
  • Step Four: The path of meditation. The practitioner continues to dissipate the mind's final obscurations and to ripen the qualities in order to aid others on a vaster scale.
  • Step Five: The path of no more learning. This is the accomplishment of the goal; enlightenment, Buddhahood.

The third step—the path of seeing—may seem distant, even inaccessible, for us. However, Khenpo Chodrak explains how we can already begin to cultivate that qualities that will allow us to attain this path. He connects the different dimensions of practice and goes into detail in such a way that what initially seems farfetched explodes into our daily life. This is the summer course: an opening onto the wide horizons of enlightened mind, and, at the same time, application in daily life.

This brings to mind Padmasambhava's teaching that, “The mind is as vast as space and action is as fine as grains of flour.”

Khenpo Chodrak, this petite, sixty seven-year-old monk, has been leading the summer course for twenty-four years! He is one of the greatest scholars of the Kagyu lineage, Gyalwa Karmapa's teacher, and a reference for us all. When we listen to the teachings he transmits, we can be certain of their reliability and precision.

For several years, Khenpo Chodrak has based the summer course on The Gateway to Knowledge, a Buddhist encyclopedia composed by Jamgon Mipham. Its four volumes of ten chapters each cover the ten key points that lead to liberation. Khenpo brings to life this precious theoretical treatise.

The summer course is also a time of meetings and collective study. Khenpo Chodrak gives the teachings in the morning and students devote their afternoons to rereading the teachings, taking Tibetan classes for those who wish, and reciting the Heart Sutra for others. It is both dense and joyful. Furthermore, we benefit from the support of the translators. Khenpo Chodrak teaches in Tibetan and translation are available in as many languages as necessary. This year: French, German, and Spanish.

It is rare to have access to such a profound, precise, and well-mastered knowledge of the Buddha's teaching for such a long period of time. Next year, we will unfold the twenty-fifth summer course. That makes a quarter of a century that we explore the Dharma in all its facets: the theory of perception, the philosophical schools, the different dimensions of meditation practice, etc. 2017 will be an anniversary of sorts and the theme of study is appropriate: enlightenment, perfect Buddhahood. All this bodes very well...
