17th Gyalwa Karmapa"Buddhism is a way of life through which we develop the qualities of our mind.
This way of life is very unusual, as it is a means to attain happiness without harming others.

Khenpo Chodrak Rinpoche in 2005

When I discuss precise points of the Buddha's doctrine with Jigme Rinpoche or with passing scholars and we have to go into detail, there often comes a moment when this sentence—almost definitive—is pronounced: “In order to be sure, we have to ask Khenpo Chodrak Rinpoche.” Everyone knows that his responses are a source of exact and certain information, that they will be expanded by citations and historical context if necessary. What is striking about Khenpo Rinpoche is of course his memory, his knowledge of the texts and his ability not to lose a single detail, but also his ability to understand the context. He teaches the most eminent masters and, as he has confided to us, his way of teaching continues to evolve even today. He is not only a human database, his erudition guarantees the preservation of the transmission of the texts; he is what we can call a living holder of a living knowledge! This year makes twenty-five years that he comes to Dhagpo for three weeks each year to transmit the texts most essential to the tradition.

Since Dhagpo's beginnings, those here have cultivated the aspect of study in one form or another. It is one of the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa's wishes to see the study of texts flourish in his centers among practitioners. We know it: in our lineage, listening and reflecting are always in service of practice—be it meditation or daily activity. This wish has become Dhagpo Kagyu Ling's Institute: a space devoted to higher studies of Buddhism, open to interdisciplinary dialogue and to people engaged in a process of research at the crossroads of different types of knowledge. Dhagpo's summer course, which began in July 1992, is a reliable cause. The numerous texts systemically studied, the different philosophical aspects of Buddhism explored (the middle way, the theory of knowledge, Buddha nature, etc.), the different teachers who have transmitted this knowledge with Khenpo Rinpoche's continued guidance—all this has formed and continues to form the foundations of the Institute and what it will become.

Summer 2003

This year, we celebrate twenty-five years of the summer course. Call it a coincidence...the theme of this year's teaching is the result of the path: Buddhahood. As if the previous twenty-four years have explained the causes of what Khenpo will teach this July. This theme, more than any other, has the characteristic of being impossible to express in words. The very nature of enlightenment is to be inconceivable, to be ungraspable with concepts, though it is what we are seeking to realize. Nevertheless the buddha, based on his compassionate discernment, put words to his realization to help us in our turn experience it—that is, know things as they are. Jigme Rinpoche, in his simple and direct way of teaching give us this direction:

Enlightenment is a stable state, free from all unhappiness. The mind is so clear that there is no longer any reason to fall into confusion and to create the conditions for suffering.

ManjushriManjushri, the Bodhisattva of Wisdom

Enlightenment is what remains when all the mind's flaws have dissipated and its qualities have been brought to maturity. Enlightenment is when the dual benefit is fully accomplished. We trust Khenpo Chodrak Rinpoche, who bases his teaching on the text Gateway to Knowledge by Jamgon Mipham, to give us something to contemplate such that study nurtures and inspires our practice.

With a wish: that the summer course may endure a long time.
